Victoria University 0-2 Kiira Young
Kiira Young moved a big step closer to joining the Bell Super League after beating the much hyped SC. Victoria University 2-0 at Mandela National stadium, Namboole. An 11th minute goal from striker Oguti Henry gave the visitors an early lead after a mix up in the hosts rear guard that saw Captain Waisswa Tonny headed directly in the path of the on rushing Oguti who made no mistake but shoot direct into the net.
SCVU tried to attack but could not find the equalizer and the first half ended 1-0 in favor of the visitors who were lucky to escape two genuine penalty claims in the opening 45 minutes. In the second half, both teams tried to play an offensive game but still could not add to the game’s goals.
In the 60th minute, SCVU’s hopes of getting an equalizing goal were minimized as the team was reduced to ten men after Wajja Moses was straight red carded for allegedly abusing the assistant referee amid protests from the home players led by Guma Denis.
In the 86th minute, SCVU’s minimal hopes of getting at least a point from the encounter were dented as lousy defending allowed former SC.Villa and Kinyara striker Gideon Ssekamwa extended Kiira Young’s lead.
The win moves Kiira to 30 points and are now clear favorites to qualify for the 2012/12 Bell super League while SCVU remain on 19 points. Speaking to kawowo sports after the game, Victoria University’s Coach Ivan Zoric congratulated his opponents but no other comment was made. “I congratulate Kiira Young, just that”, an unhappy Zoric lamented.
His opposite George Ssemwogerere was happy with his team’s performance. “Am happy the boys have won the game and our aim was to collect three points something we have achieved”, said Ssemwogerere.
Despite being a big league clash, the game was watched by a mammoth crowd and sounds of vuvuzelas from the travelling fans made it even more interesting though it was short on entertainment on the pitch. Cranes Coach Bobby Williamson, his assistant Jackson Mayanja and FUFA Vice President in charge of the super league were also in attendance.
