Janet Achola is one of the few athletes who made it to the London Olympics due next month, beating failure by a whisker.
Achola ran 4:05.52 in the 1500m at the Hengelo meet last month, the current national record, hence making it to the summer games.
Although she did not win a medal (finished fifth), Achola scooped the Uspa monthly gong.
She prepares to race in the finals today at the Charles de Gaulle stadium, Porto Novo in the 18th Africa Senior Athletics Championships.
Since she is assured of a London slot, she will be under less pressure and hence her concentration will be on getting a podium finish.
Viola Chemos meanwhile came sixth (16:16.21) in the women’s 5000m and couldn’t hit the Olympics qualifying mark. She now targets to reach the mark at next year’s World Athletics Championships in Moscow, Russia.
