Eagles used a late fourth quarter surge to pin a 70-63 loss to Dmark Power and their third of the season in the Airtel National Basketball League.
Just like the first round, the game was closely contested until garbage time heroics from Yusuf Muhamed and Ivan Lumanyika helped Eagles to break away for their sixth win of the season.
Eagles (6-6) were aggressive all game and grinded for every ball and took the first quarter 14-12 but Power (9-3) responded and won the next two to take a 2 points lead in the final period.
Power leading 52-50 with 7:09 Collin Mukiza (9 points) knocked down a 3-ball to increase lead to 5 and defending champions looked to be pulling away but Eagles responded, went ahead 58-57 with 4:01 and took over all the way.
Power had a chance to go ahead with 1:25 when Collin was again sent to the line, Power trailing 63-64 but he missed both shots and was the end of the road for the back-to-back champions.
Power’s coach, Bernes Akunda, called for a time 52 second s to the buzzer and on return Jimmy Enabu hit the still from down town.
Four foul shots, two from point guard Yusuf Mohamed (game high 19points) and Ivan Lumanyika (17points, 18 rebounds) in the final 20 seconds were the last daggers. Farouk Omar added 12 points for Eagles.
Isaac Lugude and Emmanuel Enabu contributed 9 points each for Power.
Victoria University Heaters beat Ndejje University Angels 46-36 in the other game in the men’s division. Heaters’ Center, Derrick Mbusi led the way for Heaters with 14 points and 16 rebounds while Geoffrey Soro’s game high 18 points were in a losing effort.
The Angels’ power forward also picked 9 rebounds.
Meanwhile in the women’s division, UCU Lady Canons blew out MUK Cubs 100-18. Purity Adhiambo and Maureen Amoding combined for 41 points to pace Lady Canons. Peace Proscovia added 11 points and Brenda Mbone chipped in with 10 for lady canons.
Rashida Namubiru led Cubs with 5. Judith nansobya, monica apaco and bridget atukunda combined for 40 points to power KIU Rangers to a 66-25 win over Amazon Rhino. Joan Mochiruku scored 6 for Amazon.
