Masooli Youth over the weekend claimed the 2012 annual Palle Moeller youth soccer trophy after the Luweero District based Academy team beat the tournament’s hosts, Nkumba Youth, 5-4 on penalty shootouts in Entebbe.

Hamis ‘Kiiza’ Lugolobi piercing header in the 72nd minute of the final game played at Nkumba University play ground in Entebbe, restored parity for Masooli after Masiira Stuart strike had put the Nkumba ahead 3 minutes into second half. FUFA grade 3 ref, Mutyaba Harbert, forced the duo teams into penalty shootouts following a-1 all draw where Masooli won by 5-4.

“It has been luck and determination of both the technical bench and my players that led us to success. Masooli youth team Coach, Kiwanuka Devis told Kawowo.com when contacted after the winning whistle was blown.

The 7th edition of this one day Palle Moeller tournament that climaxed with a dinner, is annually organized by the Palle Moeller Foundation Uganda a charity Non Government Organization (NGO) affiliated to Pelle Moeller Organization of United Kingdom. The NGO has four Directors who at every end of each year set a youth team and compete in a Gala tourney.

Nkumba youth, Nangabo youth, Makindwe youth and Masooli youth are the teams respectively owned by the four directors and vie each other every year. Record winners Makindwe youth (3 times winner) and defending champions Nangabo youth (won it once) had to battle for a loser’s match that ended 1 – nil in favor of Makindwe.

The Palle Moeller Foundation National chairman, Dr. Nganwa Williams, congratulated the winning team and awarded them a trophy before he called for unity among the gathering dominated by majority of Entebbe residents football enthusiastic fans who watched the fully entertaining gala tournament “We are here to unit as Ugandans” Dr. Nganwa persuaded.

“Let us use such gatherings (championships) as an opportunity to interact and get to know each other”. The guest of honor added.

Meanwhile, Nkumba youth’s Katenda Hassan won the Omweso championship.
