MTN Kyabazinga Championships (Bugembe Stadium)
As the 8th Edition of the Kyabazinga Track and Field Championships gets underway on Saturday at Bugembe Stadium in Jinja, Suzan Nahamya, 12, is expected to be among the contestants to vie for hefty package that includes 3 Million Cash prizes courtesy of sponsors, MTN Uganda.
Suzan, a resident of Kamuli District will join Uganda’s elite and seasoned in Batyo Claire (Nalinya Lwantale Girls SS), old guards Gamba Mildred (Rwenzori), Emilly Nanziri (Police), Scovia Ayikoru (Serere) and Moureen Banura (Gombe, Moses odong, Johnson Anywar, Bidusu Hamidu from Ndejje University and Musa Isabirye (Fame), Ronald Musagala (KU), Sasia Emmanuel (Police) and Fredrick Chemonges (UPDF) while in the women’s affair will feature Winnie Nanyondo, Halima Nakaayi (KU), Ajok Dorcus (Ndejje), Aneno Suzan (Gombe), home girl Edina Kasuubo (Nalinya Lwantale Girls) and Stella Chesang (Alpha) in a quest to qualify for the 2013 World Athletics Championships and World Youth Championships and other international competitions scheduled for this year.
“The top three winners in each track or field event as well as top three teams from Busoga region will walk away with ‘yellow’ cash prizes courtesy of MTN Uganda”, says Namayo Mawerere, the Uganda Athletics Federation Publicist.
The Busoga teams contesting for the top honours comprise districts Kamuli, Iganga, Mayuge, Bugiri, Namutumba, Jinja, Kaliro, Namayingo, Buyende, Kakira Sugar Works, Bugembe Youth Club, Jinja Nursing School , Jinja SS, Iganga King of Kings, Iganga Town View SS among others.
“Stiff opposition however is expected in the sprint events (100m/200m/400m) since athletes have generally made improved performances this season compared to last season.
Secondary schools especially from Busoga region should take advantage by participating in the Kyabazinga competition to enable selection of their respective teams for the District and National Secondary Schools’ Athletics Championships due July this year”, Namayo adds.
