GOtv 2013 CECAFA Group B:

Zambia 1 – 0 Burundi

Tanzania 1 – 0 Somalia

A well tapped 64th minute effort from second half substitute, Festus Mbewe has guided CECAFA guest team, Zambia to that much desired victory in the GOtv CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup group B fixture played on a muddy Nyayo National Stadium turf in Nairobi on Sunday.

Following a barren first half, Zambia French tactician, Patrick Beaumelle, who had surprisingly called in 4 changes to the starting 11 from the side that played Tanzania during that 1 all draw in Machakos, introduced Festus Mbewe for Bornwell Mwape, and the trend of the game evidently transformed in their favour.

“With all the due respect to this tournament, we traveled here to test new players on the team and to win as well”, the french said in the post match mandatory coaches’ press conference held at the Nyayo stadium media center after the game.

In the first game of group B played in heavy rains, Tanzania struggled to overcome a resilient Somalia side courtesy of an Athuman Chanongo goal after 57 minutes.

The two results imply that Somalia is off the pace, having lost the opening two fixtures (had lost 2-0 earlier to Burundi). This leaves Tanzania, Zambia and Burundi in the running, for the quaterfinal slots as the last group games approach.

Felix Katongo, whose donkey work down the right flank resulted into that beautiful cross for Mbewe’s goal, won the man of the match accolade. The award comes forthwith a DSTV Decoder, given to every star performer in a particular match.

CECAFA action resumes on Monday as the 13 time record Champions, Uganda entertains Horn of Africa nation, Eritrea as Sudan plays Rwanda in the other Group C match. These two games will be played at the City Stadium after CECAFA confirmed the abrupt venue change following the heavy rains that have made the Machakos surface unplayable.
