CECAFA region’s only remain representative Burundi face much fancied DR Congo in their last group D game with reaching the quarters the only thing on the back of their mind.
The Les Hirondelles sit on top of the group with four points and need just a draw to advance following a 0-0 draw in their opener against Gabon before beating Mauritania 3-2 in their second game.
Burundi Coach Naseem Lofty was upset at the manner of the two goals his side conceded against Mauritania last time out and has called for a tighter defence against the Congolese.
“We conceded funny goals against Mauritania and this will not be accepted again. We need to be disciplined in defence because we are sure DR Congo will come at us,” said Lofty. “We are happy the goals are coming, but we need to protect the back.”
DR Congo must win as a draw, coupled with a loss for Gabon against Mauritania, would take them level on points with the former in second, but still behind them on CAF’s head-to-head rule.
It means the usually attacking Congolese will be even more keen to get forward against a Burundi side that have looked solid in the competition so far.
DR Congo should have coach Santos Mutubile back on the bench after he was sent-off in their opening 0-0 draw with Mauritania.
The teams have only met on one previous occasion almost 40 years ago, when DR Congo were known as Zaire and triumphed 1-0 in July 1976.
