Uganda Christian University (UCU) Doves and KCCA have started the 2014 volleyball season in high spirits.
UCU and KCCA lifted the eighth edition of the Rehema Kakooza Memorial Tournament ‘Nemo Duu’ last weekend in the men and women categories respectively.
In a round robin format, UCU defeated Wazeei, KCCA, (in straight sets) together before dropping just a set against Nemostars and Sport-S. It was UCU’s first Nemo Duu title despite taking part in the past seven editions.
“Starting the season on a high and with a new club is a big motivation,” said UCU’s new recruit Mark Okurut. “This is something we will surely build on, moving forward,” added the former Sport-S and St Mary’s Kitende power attacker.
The highlight of the tournament though was Serie C outfit Wazeei defeating two time winner and hosts Nemostars 2-1 (25-15, 24-26, 25-18). Nemostars moments later lost to UCU in similar style (18-25, 27-25, 25-23).
KCCA ladies dropped only one set as the won all their matches in the lady’s category; they have now won the championship a record six times.
