A whopping 1372 points were recorded in 13 different fixtures of the Zuku TV basketball games played at Uganda Christian University (UCU) and Makerere University courts on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Despite the threatening chilly weather conditions, fans braved the drizzling rains to catch action on Saturday that produced 955 points in the 10 games played at UCU in Mukono.

“The massive scores spell an offensive positive out of the game but still it reflects defenses have to be tightened as well”, John Kyagambiddwa of Makerere University reasons.

In some of the ladies’ games played over on Saturday, Kampala University led from the onset 14 – 2 in the first quarter of the game, to 17 – 7 by half time in their 36 – 23 victory over UMU – thanks to Victoria Ondiso and Maggie Wesonga, who top scored for Kampala University with 12 points apiece while Ramasa Francine was Cavendish’s best performer with 11 points coming off 4 rebounds though with no assist.

Uganda Martyrs’ University will have Xinakuzi Nakazi to thank for a game inspirational performance that saw her score 17 points in her team’s victory.

UCU’s Purity Odhiambo collected a massive 81 points, 15 rebounds and 7 assists in the two UCU lady Canon games played. On Saturday, they out staged IUIU 127 – 07 and extended the ‘massacre’ the next day at Makerere to the same opposition 100 – 13.

Bridger Nakamoga scored 23 points and Everyn Adhimabo got 20 points on Saturday, but Sunday surely belonged to Purity and Flavia Nakato who fetched 14 points 3 rebounds while Niswaliba Natongo had a team high 3 points for IUIU on Saturday but Shifah Assimwe and Sumaya Nabiranda cast some smiles on the IUIU team with a combined effort of 6 points (3 apiece) at Makerere University.

In the men’s games, Ndejje’s  Jonah Otim ran the show in Mukono following his game high 28 points with 3 pointers, 3 rebounds and 14 two pointers in Ndejje’s 76 – 69 victory over Cavendish University as Walker Obedi’s coached side led throughout all the quarters – 21 – 20, 20 -19, 16-15 and 19 -15.

Other top performers on Saturday were IUIU’s Joseph Bwire, though his 21 game high points for IUIU were not enough as his team succumbed to a 49 margin loss in their 31 – 80 defeat to UMU.

Daniel Babara got 20 points for UMU with 2 rebounds and 5 assists. On Sunday at Makerere University, Ivan Rumanyika scored a game high 25 points for UCU, with 9 rebounds and a single assist in his team’s 100 – 35 victory over IUIU.

Joseph Bwiire was best performer for IUIU with 17 points, 4 rebounds and 1 assist.

IUIU men reserved the best for last with a sweet but hard fought 43 – 37 victory over Kisubi Brothers University on Sunday. IUIU led the first quarter 11 -12 and the game tied 22 all by the half time whistle.

IUIU stretched the lead in the third quarter with an 8 – 17 triumph and despite a Kisubi University 3 point win (7 – 4) in the last quarter, it was little too late to save their blushes as the final score read, 43 – 37 in favour of IUIU.

The next series of games will be played at Uganda Martyr’s University in Nkozi, Kampala University and Ndejje Universities, all on Tuesday, 1st April 2014. UCU travels to Nkozi while Bugema goes to Kampala University.
