Candidate Master Haruna Nsubuga, was the pick of the day with a shocking win over FIDE Master Harold Wanyama in the second round of the Zone 4.2 chess championships that are on-going at City Oil Hall here at Kamwokya in Kampala on Sunday.
The victory earned the flamboyant Nsubuga his second point in the tournament that will have the chess players play a total of nine rounds in this tournament that has attracted players from Egypt, Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Ethiopia and hosts Uganda.
In the other thrilling games International Master Elijah Emojong beat Kenya’s Ken Omolo to get to maximum points out of 2 rounds as FM Arthur Ssegwanyi beat fellow Ugandan Raphael Buti as Candidate Master .
CM Patrick Kawuma, who only entered the fray after there was an odd number of participants (a situation that calls for the hosts entering an extra player), beat fellow Olympian Mathias Ssonko to get to 2 points as well.
Egyptian IM Hesham Abdelrahman did the same to Abera Aydagnuhem of Ethiopia to join the leading pack at 2 points.
Egyptian GM El Gindy Essam recovered from a first round draw to beat Uganda’s Daniel Bagaadde as Kenya’s Ben Magana suffered a surprise loss at the hands of Mesfin Leykun.
Two games will be played on Monday 20 April 2015 with the third round beginning at 9:00 am with a mouth watering tie between Uganda’s IM Emojong and Egyptian IM Abdelrahman. Ssegwanyi plays Kawuma as the Grandmaster takes on Nsubuga Haruna.
In the ladies category, Uganda’s Goretti Angolikin lost to Egypt’s Eman Elansary (1865) while WFM Ivy Amoko beat fellow Ugandan WCM Phiona Mutesi.
Grace Kigeni drew with Gloria Nansubuga as Christine Namaganda beat Kalisa Odile.
