Uganda’s Raphael Buti has beaten Egyptian Grandmaster El Gindy Essam in round 5 of the ongoing Zone 4.2 Africa Chess Championship at City Oil on Kira Road in Kamwokya, Kampala.
It’s was the second surprise result in the week after a similar one were Kenyan Ben Magana, held the North African Grand Master in the opening round of the tournament.
Essam is struggling and has 3 points from 5 rounds.
Buti, will be seeking another victory to ensure that he becomes a Candidate Master, better even FIDE Master he now has 4 points out of five rounds with 4 more rounds to go he together with International Master Hesham Abdelraham from Egypt have the same number of points going into round 6.
Arthur Ssegwanyi still leads with 4.5 points and is poised to land an International Master Status if he continues with his unstoppable run he drew with International Master Elijah Emojong in today’s round 5, Emojong has 3.5 points.

In the ladies category Egyptian Women Candidate Master Ehab Tasneem leads with 4 points while Goretti Angolikin, Women FIDE Master Ivy Amoko, WCM Egypt’s Elansary Eman, WCM Phiona Mutesi, and Grace Kigeni all have 3.5 points each.
The tournament concludes on Saturday and the one week tournament is sponsored by City Tyres.
