You have to go back to 2009 when a Ugandan club last won a tournament outside the country, and then KAVC women lifted the Rwanda Genocide Memorial championship.
Last weekend the 20th edition of the same tournament came to an end, and like the norm has been in the recent past, no Ugandan team managed to make it beyond the semifinal stage.
Nemostars, KAVC, Sky and Sport-S represented in the men, only Nemostars made it past the last eight hurdle but were humbled by APR 3-2 (25-19, 23-25, 21-25, 25-19, 15-11) in their semifinal tie.
Actually, APR had whitewashed Sport-S in straight sets in the quarterfinal stage before eliminating Nemostars 3-2 in the semifinals Nemostars salvaged some pride by beating Inatek 3-2 to win bronze.
“Ugandan teams are very strong but are yet to believe in themselves,” said tournament director Paul Bitok.
“Ugandans need to start believing in themselves, but when they learn they are playing against teams from Kenya or Rwanda they get affected psychologically,” he added.
Sport-S ladies were appearing at the tournament for the first time in a long time, they gave a good account of themselves when they reached the last four.
They fell short of a final appearance when Rwanda Revenue Authority defeated them in straight sets (25-20, 25-21, 25-22).
Vision Volleyball Camp for the second straight year were stopped by Nairobi Water 3-1 (24-26, 27-25, 9-25, 23-25).
The sides squared off for the bronze medal match and VVC cruised off with it 3-0.
