The 2015 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup kicked-off on Saturday afternoon in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Hosts, Ethiopia got off a rough start as they lost 1-0 to Rwanda in a physical game infront of home fans at the Addis Ababa Stadium.
Jacques Tuyisenge fired home the only goal of the Group A match in the second half. Rwanda also had penalty shout for Girma Aschalew’s handball ignored by the referee and Djihad Bizimana also had an effort hit the bar.
Rwanda’s keeper, Olivier Kwizera pulled off a save to deny Eliyas Mamo and Ethiopia the equalizer ten minutes from time.
In the opening match of the two week tournament, Burundi went on top of Group B following a 1-0 win over Zanzibar.
Despite Burundi’s win, it was the Zanzibaris who started strong with Selemani Kassim a constant threat from the right.
Ame Ally also had a chance for Zanzibar early in the game but his shot took a couple of deflections and was calmly collected by Burundi’s goalkeeper, Arthur Arakaze.
Fuadi Ndayisenga had Burundi’s first real chance of the first half but couldn’t convert the opportunity.
As Burundi started to get into the game, Laudit Mavugo had his goal ruled out for offside before Didier Kavumbagu broke the deadlock for the only goal of the match.
Day two of the tournament will see record winners Uganda take on Kenya while Tanzania will play Somalia.
