Ugandan clubs stand a bigger chance of making it to the group stages of the CAF Champions League and Confederations Cup and playing more continental club football for a longer spell starting next year.

This is after the continental body decided to expand the teams that qualify for the group stages from eight to sixteen.

Meaning, four groups of four will participate at the group stages instead of the current eight at the pool stage.

The development was revealed by CAF President, Issa Hayatou in his address at the 38th CAF Ordinary General Assembly held on Wednesday, 11 May 2016 in Mexico City, Mexico.

In attendance was FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who was at the supreme and legislative meeting of the continent’s football governing body for the first time since assuming the leadership of the world governing body.

Vipers head coach, George Best Nsimbe who was in charge of the side on their maiden continental appearance where they were eliminated by 2003 and 2004 winner Enyimba of Nigeria who are already into the group stages of the 2016 competition is delighted by the development;

That means the target will be to go past the preliminary and first round, then you are into the group stages, which is good thing because that means one will have a chance of playing more at the continental stage against different teams from different regions

Said Nsimbe who has also been at that stage with KCCA and Victors in the past.
