Effective 2017, the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup will be expanded to sixteen (16) in group stages.

This was revealed by the CAF president Issa Hayatou whilst addressing the 38th CAF Ordinary General Assembly held this week in Mexico City, Mexico.

The new reform means there will be four groups with each having four teams unlike at the moment when only two groups are considered.

The new rule is more likely to give opportunity to clubs from lowly ranked leagues to make it to the lucrative group stages of the competitions.

Nevertheless, there was nothing revealed on how teams will be seeded and at what stage will teams enter the group phases.

Uganda is always represented by only two clubs, one that wins the league goes to the CAF Champions League and the Uganda Cup winners earn a ticket to CAF Confederations Cup.

No Ugandan club has ever reached the group stages of either competition.
