A marathon held in honour of fallen Uganda Cranes goalie, Abel Dhaira on the national Heroes day in Jinja registered its utmost aspirations.

According to the marathon chief organizer Faizal Mayemba, the event was well attended.

We achieved the aims of the Abel Dhaira marathon.

The attendance was great with happy people ready to celebrate the life of our hero.

At least Shs19M was the intended target from the marathon with the raising proceeds to be channeled towards the construction of Dhaira’s monument at Dhaira’s Memorial Stadium formerly Tabacco ground in honour of his great deeds.

Ambassador of Uganda in the Nordic countries, Kibedi Zake was the chief runner.

The Marathon theme was “Abel Dhaira is my Hero” in the event run by current Uganda Cranes skipper, Geofrey Massa, former and active players, among others.

Mark Itaaga, a presenter with 100.3 F.M Galaxy Zziina lauded all the participants who took part in the marathon.

Abel (Dhaira) was a friend to all. It is good people have responded positively to this cause to run in the marathon

On 27th March 2016, death robbed the sports fraternity of a dedicated, hard working , disciplined and God fearing man, Abel Dhaira.

At the time of his death, Dhaira was plying his trade in Iceland at IBV Vestmannaeyjar. He also featured for local clubs Express FC and URA, AS Vita in Congo and the Tanzanian outfit Simba.
