Uganda Chess Federation president, Vianney Luggya has been lauded by former African Champion, El Gindy Essam.

Just for good measure, Luggya who took over office in 2014 was described as the ‘saviour’ after overseeing a successful African Individual Chess Championship held at Tick Hotel, Kampala.

Luggya, a former Olympian also received praises from the 2003 African Champion for his simplicity and modesty.

“I salute the president and the federation for this great work,” El Gindy a three time gold medalist with the Egyptian National team acclaimed. “Vianney (Luggya) made life easy for me and I think everyone will agree with me. He solved every problem I had and made our stay here a perfect experience.”

In what was Uganda’s first time to host an event of such magnitude, the results posted were phenomenal as it turned out to be one of the most successful tourneys in the region.

To have achieved the desired outcome is a feeling supported by the positive experience of players who took part in the competition.

“I think the word ‘great’ sums it up. It was a wonderful experience,” El Gindy said of the tournament.

After days of intense competition, a rare face emerged as champion.

Egypt’s number ten seed, Hesham Abdelrahman beat competition from not only Zambia’s Andrew Kayonde, but also his highly experienced countrymen to win his maiden African Championship, and El Gindy couldn’t shy away from expressing his delight.

I’m happy for him. He is a young and an exciting talent.

After beating Kayonde, I knew he was going win it. He has worked so hard for this moment and yes he deserves the limelight.

The 50 year old who settled for a fifth finish, has represented Egypt four consecutive times in the World Cup.

He boasts of individual gold and bronze medals at international stage.
