The national U-18 men’s basketball team finished 9th at the recently concluded Afrobasket championship in Kigali, Rwanda.
The side managed only two wins at the event but head coach Nicholas Natuhereza is pleased with everything the boys did on their debut at the continental stage.
“The boys played their hearts out and as a coach I am satisfied with what we did at the tournament,” the UCU Canons tactician told the press. “Looking at the preparations we had and the competition we faced, you have to give credit to the boys,” he added.
Playing at this level for the first time, the Ugandans received a baptism of fire losing to DRC, Tunisia and Egypt.
They defeated Benin in the group stages before beating Gabon in the classification games to finish 9th out of 11 teams at the tournament after Zimbabwe pulled out at the 11th hour.
The national team committee revealed that the ladies’ U-18 side will also get all the funding needed to make their trip to Cairo, Egypt next month.
The girls team defeated Kenya in the Zone V championship held in Kampala in June and will also make their debut at the continental level next month.
