Vipers’ new signing Hassan Wasswa Mawanda put up a decent show on his debut and he dictated proceedings from the middle.

The Ugandan international was a man mountain in the anchorman role for the two-time champions whose 1-0 win Entebbe Road rivals Lweza ended a two match streak with victory.

Speaking after the game, the dreadlocked admit delight in playing his first competitive game after some time out.

“It’s nice to be back,” he said. “It was a difficult game against tough opponents but the most important mission was to get three points which we achieved,” he added.

Wasswa looked tired towards the end of the game and only the introduction Geoffrey Wasswa for Tony Odur saw him relieved of more roles.

I was playing alone in the defensive role and after such a long time, I was bound to lose energy given the intensity of the game.

The ex-KCCA and SC Villa player also admitted he still has a long way to go in reaching his desired levels and said that despite playing well, he was only operating at 50% but am convinced the team will make me better.

I was only operating at 50%. But playing with boys who are fast will no doubt improve my fitness and game as well.

Wasswa, a last gasp substitute against Comoros in the 2017 AFCON qualifiers earned plaudits from his coach, Abdallah Mubiru.

It’s clear for everyone to see what he gave us. He dictated the tempo of the game using his experience and was huge for us in the middle. A fantastic showing on his debut for me.

On Friday, Vipers take on title rivals KCCA seeking to trim the six-point gap and Wasswa’s experience is expected to play a pivotal role in the game.
