National Women’s basketball coach Ali Mavita and a group of coaches are camped at Ssaku Secondary School with a group of girls who have an interest in the game of basketball.

Score Beyond, a group that brings together trained coaches and active players, organized the week long activity to empower the girl child.

“We empower girls with a lot in the holidays,” Mavita, who is the leader of the group told Kawowo Sports at the camp in Luwero district.

The camp has brought together 70 girls with 20 coming from the host school. Some of the girls have played for the national U-18 side at the recently concluded Afrobasket Championship in Cairo, Egypt.

“Our target is to ensure that we raise girls of value. These kids will be a big influence to society in the future,”

The camp is running concurrently with a FIBA Beginners Coaches’ module which has attracted more female candidates compared to their male counterparts.

The event is set to run annually as one of the main events on the Uganda Women’s Basketball Association calendar.

The camp will come to an end on Saturday with a health drive around the areas surrounding Ssaku SS.

The closing ceremony is expected to be graced by federation president Ambrose Tashobya, National Council of Sports representative and head of coaches association Brian Rugyendo.
