AFCON 2021:

  • 1st Quarterfinal: Cameroon 2-0 The Gambia
  • 2nd Quarterfinal: Burkina Faso 1-0 Tunisia

Cameroon strolled to the semifinals of the 2021 AFCON following a 2-0 win over The Gambia at the Japoma Stadium in Douala on Saturday evening.

Karl Toko Ekambi scored a second-half brace for the Indomitable Lions.

Five minutes into the second half, Fai’s cross from the right found the head of Karl Toko Ekambi, who then directed a header past the right hand of Gaye to put the hosts in charge.

Towards the hour mark, Martin Hongla got free down the left and provided a low cross for Ekambi to fire home and make it 2-0.

Vincent Aboubakar, the Cameroon skipper, had a great chance to put home the third goal in the dying minutes and continue his scoring form, latching onto a rebound after Gaye had denied substitute Clinton N’Jie, but he fired over the target.

Cameroon will now face either Egypt or Morocco (who meet on Sunday evening in their quarterfinal clash) during the first semifinal in Yaounde on Wednesday, 2 February.

In the second quarterfinal, a ten-man Burkina Faso beat North Africans Tunisia 1-0. Dango Ouattara scored the only goal and was later sent off for rough play.
