Over 100 gross players took part in the first day of the national team qualifiers at Uganda Golf Club (UGC) in Kampala on Monday, February 14, 2022.
Dennis Styles Asaba, playing off handicap two carried the day with 139 total gross in 36 rounds.
Asaba, a member at Tooro Golf Club in Fort Portal scored 1-under 71 in the first 18 holes and 4-under 68 during the subsequent round.
Another Tooro Golf Club member Michael Shawn Alunga (141), Mehta’s Godfrey Nsubuga (144), the reigning Uganda Open champion Joseph Cwinyaai (146) and Tom Jingo (146) completed the top five positions.
“We had qualifiers underway after sometime since we last played competitively. The competition was healthy. Personally, I expect improved scores on day two in Entebbe” Nsubuga remarked.

Juniors:
Ibrahim Ssemakula scored 76 and 72 for a combined 148 gross in 36 holes to topple the rest of the crop in the Junior catergory.
Others included; Collins Matovu 76, 78 (154), Marvin Kibirige 79, 76 (155), Joseph Reagan Akena 78, 80 (158) and Charles Lwanga 80, 79 (159) for the top five.
Junior Females:
Only six females took part in 18 holes’ competition won by Winnie Musuya (86).
The duo of Sharoon Nabukeera and Fresta Birabwa tied on 99 strokes apiece for the joint second position.
Others were; Jovia Apio (101), Shadia Nanduga (104) and Vivian Acen (111).
42 seniors made the cut and will play another 36 holes on Tuesday, 15th February 2022 in Entebbe.
16 juniors (male) made the cut for the final day of the qualifiers and all the 6 junior females will also play on Tuesday in Entebbe.
The national team squad has 25 players that make up the pool from which the selection for the final teams is made after training.
