Allan Oyirwoth in action

Uganda U20 Men’s National Team midfielder Allan Oyirwoth believes they have made a statement at the ongoing African Games in Accra, Ghana by defeating two super powers in Nigeria and Senegal.

The Hippos secured their second win at the tournament in as many games on Monday after edging Senegal 1-0 at Accra Sports Stadium.

It should be noted that Uganda won its first game 2-1 against Nigeria and thus progress to the semifinals with a group game (against South Sudan) to spare.

Oyirwoth who scored the lone goal against Senegal believes their performance so far at the tournament has helped them to show to the world what they are capable of.

“I am so happy that we have won against Senegal and helping my country to reach the semifinals. Definitely, beating Nigeria and Senegal in a space of days is no mean feat and this is a testament of how good we are as a team.” He said in a post match interview.

The lanky midfielder who features for Brook House College in the UK believes the underdog tag has helped to ease pressure on them.

“We were looked at as underdogs and that perhaps eased pressure on us but we knew what we can do and many people are surprised by our performance. Senegal is the best on the African continent and Nigeria is equally among the top teams so beating them is indeed a great achievement.” Oyirwoth stated.

He however asserts that the Uganda Hippos will not get carried away but rather focus on their next games and the ultimate target of winning gold.

“We must remain calm and take game by game. We are going back to prepare for South Sudan and the semifinal as well. Our target is to go all the way and win gold.”

Uganda will return to action on Friday this week against South Sudan in the final group game at the University of Ghana Stadium.
