Holders BUL began their defence of the Fufa Super 8 tournament with a 1-1 draw against 10-man Maroons.

In a closely contested tie at St. Mary’s stadium, Kitende, Jerome Kiirya drew first blood with a brilliant strike at the clock of halftime before Brian Omirambe capitalized on calamitous goalkeeping in the second half.

BUL started better with new signing Dickson Mataama forcing a good save from Amir Nalugooda but the Prison warders later grew into the game.

The first half appeared destined to end with a score less draw but Maroons failed to clear their lines which saw debutant Isaac Wagoina set up Kiirya for a wonder goal.

Five minutes after the break, Omirambe from close range levelled matters after Joel Mutakubwa fumbled with a low cross from Ronald Orombi.

The momentum was with Maroons but that changed when substitute Muwadda Mawejje was sent off for a second bookable offence midway the game in the 66th minute.

BUL piled pressure in search for the winner with the introduction of Lawrence Tezikya, Martin Aprem, Ibrahim Mugulusi and Swabir Mpaasa but with no breakthrough.

The Warders also had their own chances to win but it in the end, the two settled for a draw.

The return leg will be played at the MTN Omondi stadium, Lugogo on Wednesday next week.
