Tournament: Kwibuka Women’s Tournament Kigali
Game 2: Uganda W v Zimbabwe HPC Side
Match Summary
- Uganda 105/5 in 20 overs
- Zimbabwe 101/9 in 20 overs
- Uganda won by 4 runs
Victoria Pearls had to dig deep en route to their second win of the tournament against a determined Zimbabwe HPC side.
The game, a repeat of last year’s final, lived up to its potential and went down to the final ball of the match.
In the overcast conditions, Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to bowl first. Opening batter Esther Iloku didn’t last long, but Captain Janet Mbabazi (26) was in attack mode and her positive approach kept the scoreboard ticking. The other notable contribution with the bat came at the back from Stephanie Nampiina (22) with support from Proscovia Alako (18), with the former offering the finishing touches.
Zimbabwe was guilty of gifting Uganda as many as 24 extras, which would later come back to haunt them.
In the run chase, Kevin Amuge and Sarah Walaza struggled to deal with the very aggressive Christabel Chitonzwa (27) but once Consy Aweko got rid of her, the runs dried up for Zimbabwe.
Aweko (2/12) and Janet Mbabazi (1/10) bowled mean spells between themselves, and that passage of play slowed down Zimbabwe.
The job was left to Kevin Amuge and Sarah Walaza to finish by tidying and not allowing the Zimbabwe tail to wag.
In the final over, it came down to 11 runs required off 6 balls, but Zimbabwe was running out of resources with only one wicket left. Walaza was able to hold her nerve and conceded only seven runs to ensure the victory for the defending champions.
A good test for Team Uganda as they continue their quest for a fourth Kwibuka title.
The Zimbabwe chase ran out of steam with four runs required for the win as Uganda maintained their 100% record so far in the tournament. The win against Cameroon was followed by a win against the Zimbabwe HPC squad.
Janet Mbabazi won the player of the match award for her fine all-around performance.
The Victoria Pearls will be in action tomorrow morning against winless Sierra Leone.
