Makerere-based Ewes Rugby Club, who are attached to the Rams, finally cracked the ceiling of the core status qualifiers held on Saturday at the Ruga Ruga sports facility in Gayaza.

The Ewes came close in 2024 but were edged out by the Walukuba Titans, who have proved why they deserve to be playing in the National 7s series.

This Ewes’ victory means that they have been promoted to the National 7s series, but the question on the lips of every concerned rugby enthusiast is whether there shall be a relegation in the top division.

At the end of 2025 Women’s National 7s series, the She Wolves from Mbale finished at the bottom of the log, having put in impressive performances in their two seasons at the top.

Players like Habiba Namalembe, Gladys Wilembe and Sunday Anirwoth were such a beauty to watch, but the other five sides simply outperformed them.

The Walukuba Titans were the surprise package, making their intentions known from the start by finishing in the final of the first circuit this year. Sides like the Nile Rapids, who had their unique issues, and the Black Pearls and Avengers performed below expectations, handing over the trophy to the strong and well-deserved Thunderbirds of Kyadondo Rugby Club.

This very competitive six-team division now welcomes a powerhouse in the Ewes, who boast of talented players like Juliet Ainomugisha, Mercy Atek and Phiona Nantongo.

Whether an equally talented She Wolves gets relegated, or the women’s division gets an expansion, is a question only the Uganda Rugby Union can answer.
