Traditionally, the Uganda Cup has always marked the start of the Uganda rugby season, but things changed last year. The nationwide cup competition was unceremoniously postponed, with the Uganda Rugby Union citing lack of funds, but time does catch up.
This postponement ignited industry amongst the clubs, who mobilized themselves and played an invitational 15s tournament they dubbed the Rugby Masters Cup. The current Uganda Cup holders, the Heathens, emerged winners of that competition, and now they start their title defence against the Makerere Impis.
This year, the Uganda Cup is going to feature 20 men’s and 8 women’s teams from across Uganda. The Northern and Western regions who do not have teams in the men’s premiership shall be represented by 2 sides each, while the Eastern Region shall enjoy two extra slots, in addition to the Walukuba Barbarians and Jinja Hippos.
In the women’s category, the Black Pearls, who are the current 15s winners, confirmed they shall not be participating in the Uganda Cup, citing unavailability of players and financial constraints. This leaves the Nile Rapids, who are the defending champions, to tussle it out against last year’s losing finalists, the Avengers, the Thunderbirds and the Ewes as the title contenders.
The Uganda Cup group phase shall run from the 18th of October to the 15th of November, where the top 2 teams in each group shall proceed to the knock out phase. The final shall be played on the 6th of December at a venue yet to be decided.
