On the eve of the start of the boxing competition at the 6th Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the Ugandan camp was hit by disturbing news about the disqualification of their female boxers.

The two female boxers on the team, Fatuma Nabikolo and Angel Katushabe, will not compete since they had not conducted the mandatory Gender Eligibility Tests.

Such tests are now a prerequisite for World Boxing, the global body in charge of these games, before the competition kicks off.

“We are sad that our female boxers shall not compete despite preparing well. There was a miscommunication between our bosses at the global stage and the local federation. However, we have the two male players ready to battle,” a visibly disappointed Samuel Kabugo, Uganda’s head coach, told Kawowo Sports media at the Games Village.

Until Wednesday, the two boxers had been training to fine-tune for their opponents alongside their male counterparts Alfred Ojok and Jimmy Adriko.

Meanwhile, the technical meeting was executed on Wednesday evening and the draws were held thereafter.

Uganda’s Alfred Ojok, playing in the 80Kg category, got a bye at the first round and will now face Iranian Mohammad Nourani at the quarterfinal stage.

The winner between Ojok and Nourani will face the victor between Osmanli (Turkey) and Afghanistan’s Gulzad or Egyptian Elsharkawi F.
