Best Afcon performance: Champions [1976]

How they qualified: Qualified as hosts but were ruthless in their Group B where they were simply flawless, beating everyone in the group. 6 in 6, 18 points, 26 goals scored and only two conceded.

Only Gabon, which qualified from the group as the second-placed side, breached their backline in the process.

Realistic chance at Afcon 2025: Currently the best team in Africa and ranked 11th in the world. Morocco has not won an Afcon title since 1976, their only one.

They view this as the best opportunity to end the long wait and are surely many pundits’ favourites given the home crowd, quality of the squad and their achievements in the past couple of years, including reaching the World Cup semis in Qatar 2022.

Who is the star of the team? One of the most well-balanced squads in African football but their star man is arguably PSG right back Achraf Hakimi.

A defender that offers lots of quality in attack as well, with his bombarding moves wide and into the central areas.

Currently doubtful through an injury sustained at club level but regardless, he will be in the squad and hopefully, he recovers in time to showcase his abilities as the best in his position, probably in the world.
