Egypt secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory against South Africa in the African Cup of Nations encounter at Agadir on Friday.
Mohamed Salah was the hero as the 10-man Egypt secured maximum points to seal a knockout spot in the ongoing championship.
Both sides walked onto the playing ground clearly knowing that a victory would seal their qualification to the next round. Having won their opening games, a win was just enough.
South Africa had a chance to take the lead through Lyle Foster in the 30th minute, but his effort lacked sufficient power to beat goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy.
Salah was fouled in the box by Khuliso Mudau, leading the referee to award a penalty to the Pharaohs after a VAR review.
Salah stepped up to the assignment and guided the ball into the middle of the net, leaving goalkeeper Ronwen Williams completely beaten.
Before the end of the opening stanza, Egypt were reduced to ten men after Mohamed Hany was sent off after picking up his second booking.
South Africa were the better side in the second stanza of the game but were no sharp enough to guide the ball into the back of the net.
In the 87th minute, Bafana Bafana were all over the referee, looking for a penalty after the ball appeared to have deflected off Yasser Ibrahim’s hand. However, even after a VAR review, it was not given.
The victory ended South Africa’s long unbeaten run that saw them secure six victories and make as many draws.
