Mali put up a great show to hold Morocco in a one-all draw in the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) encounter at Prince Moulay Abdallah in Rabat on Friday.
In the 16th minute, Brahim Diaz beat two markers before creating space but Mali goalkeeper Djigui Diarra pulled off a great save to keep his side in the game.
Diaz attempted to dribble into the area and the ball seemed to have gone off Nathan Gassama’s hand but the referee waved play on.
After a VAR review, the hosts were awarded a penalty. Diaz stepped up to the assignment and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way as Morocco took the lead.
Coming from the half-time break, Morocco came out of their blocks early looking for a quick goal but put two waste two cut clear chances.
With a minute to the top of the hour, Mali’s Lassine Sinayoko was brought down in the goal area but the referee waved play on.
After strong protests from Mali, Abdou Mefire the referee, was sent to the VAR screen for a review and they were awarded a penalty.
Sinayoko stepped up to the tough assignment and sent the ball past the outstretched goalkeeper Bono.
From that point, Mali kept on its feet without fear or favour. The pressure dismantled Morocco’s shape, though the end product was lacking.
