Senegal has taken the first quarterfinal slot in the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
To advance, Senegal secured a well-deserved 3-1 victory against Sudan in the Round of 16 encounter at Grand Stade de Tanger on Saturday.
Amir Abdallah gave Sudan an early lead in the sixth minute after drilling home an emphatic strike. The forward opened his body before curling into the far right top corner.
Senegal found quick chances to level matters but Ismaila Sarr was denied from close range while Sadio Mane blasted the ball over the frame with the goal at his disposal.
Pape Gueye slotted a low, powerful strike through a forest of bodies into the bottom corner. The experienced forward Mane set up the midfielder.
In added time, Gueye doubled Senegal’s lead with a cracker that left the goalkeeper Monged Elneel with no option. However, Nicolas Jackson portrayed a high level of calmness before setting up the goal.
Coming from the halftime break, Shedding Barglan and Mohamed Saeed Ahmed had a great chance to bring Sudan back into the game but they were not sharp enough.
The 17-year-old youngster Ibrahim Mbaye put the icing on the cake with a brilliant effort in the 77th minute after being set up by Mane.
Eight minutes later, Mbaye fluffed a cut clear chance to strike a brace but his header went inches above the crossbar.
Senegal majestically match into the quarterfinals and will play the winner between Mali and Tunisia.
