Algeria sneaked into the quarterfinals of the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Algeria secured a slim 1-0 victory against the DR Congo in the AFCON encounter at the Prince Moulay Hassan Stadium on Tuesday.
Cedric Bakambu pierced into the goal area after a solo run but goalkeeper Luca Zidane palmed out his low effort from a tight angle in the 26th minute.
A minute later, Axel Tuanzebe came close to nodding Congo ahead but his header went narrowly wide of the frame.
On top of the hour, Chancel Mbembe found himself in a great position but his effort was timely blocked as Congo kept knocking on the door.
Riyad Mahrez came close to the target but his effort went slightly above the frame nine minutes after the hour mark.
In the 83rd minute, Ibrahim Maza latched on a great delivery in the area but lacked the perfect timing to find the target.
The normal time came to an end with neither side finding the back of the net and the game was dragged into extra time.
Lionel Mpasi Nzau pulled off a great save in the 111th minute to deny Fares Chaibi’s low drive from close range.
With a minute to end the extra time, Adil Boulbina broke the deadlock with a curler into the top corner of the net.
The strike came late in the game, leaving Congo with no chance to respond. Algeria will take on Nigeria in the quarterfinals.
