Denis Onyango will be the only Ugandan in the quarter finals of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League following Mamelodi Sundown’s victory over MC Alger.
The 2-0-win courtesy of goals from Brian Leon Muniz sealed the much-needed win that kept the Brazilians in the top two in Group C.
Sundowns, winners in 2016 qualified as the second placed side behind Sudan’s Al Hilal who beat DR Congo’s St. Eloi Lupopo 1-0 in Kigali to top the group.
The story was different for Onyango’s compatriot Allan Okello in Group A though after his side, Young Africans was eliminated despite a commanding 3-0 home win over Algeria’s JS Kabylie in Amaan, Zanzibar.
Okello provided the assist for the second goal as Angolan Depu bagged a brace and Boka added a third.
However, Morocco’s FAR Rabat held record winners Al Ahly in Cairo to finish a point above Young Africans with the Red Devils qualifying as the top team.
It is the second season for the Tanzanian side to miss out on the quarter finals and compatriots Simba also failed finishing bottom of their group.
