Young Africans (Yanga) maintained their position at the top of the table following a hard-fought, goalless draw against arch-rivals Simba SC at the New Amaan Complex on Sunday.

Under the floodlights, the high-stakes Kariakoo Derby began at a tentative pace, as both sides struggled to find their rhythm in a cagey opening exchange.

Despite the lack of goals, the result extends Yanga’s recent dominance over their rivals; Simba has not secured a victory in this fixture since August 13, 2023.

Despite picking a draw, Yanga remains on top of the league with 29 games from 11 matches.

Simba remains third with 24 points from 11 matches while Pamba Jiji FC lie second with 28 points having played more games.

Simba looked the sharper of the two sides in the first half. Jospin Loemba forced Yanga goalkeeper Djigui Diarra into a fingertip save after being expertly set up by Nickson Kibabage.

Yanga attempted to respond through Mohamed Damaro, but his long-range effort lacked accuracy and sailed wide of the target.

As the game opened up, Prince Dube managed to break through Simba’s backline, only to see his powerful strike palmed away by goalkeeper Djibrilla Kassali.

The drama peaked in the 70th minute when Seleman Mwalimu found the back of the net, but the celebrations were cut short as the referee’s assistant flagged the play for offside.

Ugandan playmaker Allan Okello watched from the bench during his first taste of the Kariakoo Derby.

While he didn’t see action on the pitch this time, the wait continues for the talented midfielder to make his debut in one of the continent’s most historic rivalries.
