The Ghana Football Association have sacked Black Stars head coach Nana Otto Addo just 72 days before the start of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The decision comes after a 2-1 loss to Germany in a friendly game played in Stuttgart.
“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has parted ways with the Head Coach of the senior men’s national team (Black Stars), Otto Addo, effective immediately. The Association wishes to thank Otto Addo sincerely for his contribution to the team and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavours. The Ghana Football Association will communicate the new technical direction of the Black Stars in due course,” reads a statement from the Ghana FA.
Ghana has had a string of poor results in the recent past, losing all five of its last five friendlies between November last year and today.
In that period, they lost 2-0 to Japan, 1-0 to South Korea, 1-0 to South Africa, 5-1 to Austria and most recently 2-1 to Germany.
Addo was first appointed assistant coach to Milovan Rajevac in 2021 before later getting promoted to the head coach role, but in an interim capacity, working with Chris Hutton as Technical Director at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
In 2024, he was appointed as the head coach of Ghana permanently, guiding the team to qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
Ghana are in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.
