Uganda 2-0 Ethiopia

Uganda Cranes marched on to the semi-finals of the Cecafa Tusker Cup 2012 after beating Ethiopia 2-0 in the quarter final match played at Mandela national stadium, Namboole on Tuesday evening. Geoffrey ‘Baba’ Kizito and Robert Ssentongo scored the hosts’ only goals of the game.

The Cranes started brightly and went ahead as early as the 4th minute when Kizito slotted home after Brian Umony’s shot within the Ethiopian box was blocked after a well laid ball from Moses Oloya.

From then on, Uganda dominated possession but with little penetration until the 15th minute when Robert Ssentongo failed to connect with Moses Oloya’s cross near the post.

In the 30th minute, Brian Umony should have extended Uganda’s lead but failed to put the ball in the back of the net with only the Ethiopian goalkeeper Samson Afwarki to beat following a deadly pass by Moses Oloya who had a good game especially in the first half. Despite dominating the game for longer spells in the first 45 minutes, Uganda only managed to finish the first half with a 1-0 lead.

After recess, Uganda again appeared the better side throwing everything at Ethiopia but had to wait till the 60th minute to extend their lead after Robert Ssentongo scored his second of the tournament.

The URA FC forward beautifully controlled Moses Oloya’s pass from the right with his right before shooting in the roof top of the net with his left for a contender of goal of the tournament.

Bobby Williamson withdrew Brian Umony who was stretchered off the pitch after suffering an injury for Emmanuel Okwi and later Hamis Kiiza for Said Kyeyune. Okwi and Ssentongo further missed chances but Ethiopia could do less to threaten Uganda.

It was Uganda’s second win over Ethiopia in seven days after winning the group encounter 1-0 last Tuesday. The Cranes meet Tanzania’s Taifa Stars who beat Rwanda 2-0 in the semi-finals on Thursady.

Earlier, Kenya had stormed the semifinals after beating Malawi
