Gerald Ssemambo was in scintillating form at the first National Rowing Regatta held at Miami Sand Beach, Luzira over the weekend. Not even could the green algae that invaded the ever fresh Lake Victoria waters could deny this skilled and diligent rower.
Ssemambo, who represented Uganda at last year’s rowing course in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, posted the best personal timing of the day over the 2000M competed per race. The Green belt player attributed his success to hard work.
“I feel so excited about this victory, i think it is not by chance, but by design, i train and work hard”, a smiling Ssemambo told Kawowo sports. The ladies version was dominated by Mbambu Constance who won virtually all the races she participated in with impressive timings. The teenage duo of Olara Dennis (14) and Sam Muwanguzi (14) returned good timings, a clear indication of a bright future for the sport.
This was the first Rowing event of the year that was organized with the assistance of the National Council of Sports. Rodrick Muhumuza, who sits on the Rowing normalization committee praised the participating teams for the brave show and called for harmony among the varying factions.” Our sport of Rowing needs to grow to greater heights, lets avoid division-ism as we work together”, Rodrick appealed.
However, only four teams of the expected eight teams turned up at the colourful first regatta. Efforts to find out why the other clubs missed the event were futile as none of the club managers could be traced by press time.
There was fear towards the end as the boat of Defenders’ team capsized but the rescue team, which was traveling in the accompanying boat was alert to arrest the situation and save the dear lives of players on board including their cox.
Maroons Aqua Club, who won the Quad Scull category was the top club performer on the day as they carried home 68 points. The day long event which climaxed with trophies, certificates and medal presentation, was proudly sponsored by Green Belt Leisure Centre, Miami Sand Beach, Luzira, and the foundation for senseless Kindness.
The next Regatta shall be held in August and one in December.
