When the bell sounded, Chepkoech kicked stronger and faster than Chemutai who played second fiddle inside the final 300 metres.

Efforts to play-catch up to the leader could not yield any dividends as she powered her way to the finishing line amidst excitement and loud screams from the spectators in the stands of the stadium.

Chemutai joins Halima Nakaayi who also won silver in the 800M on Tuesday.

Joyce Josephine Lalam won the first ever medal for Uganda in Javelin in these games, finishing third after throwing a distance of 57.01m.

South African Jo-ane Van Dyk won a gold medal with a new African Games record, throwing a distance of 60.80 ahead of fellow South African, Van Schalkwyk Jana.
