Edrae Kagombe over the weekend claimed the Insurance Company of East Africa amateur golf tournament held at the Mbarara Sports Club.
Kagombe took home the trophy beating a field of 34 amateur players to inscribe her name in the second edition of this tournament.
Playing off handicap 18 she carded a nett score of 68 to claim the overall prize.
“This is a special and memorable win for me, as the lady captain for this club I am happy to have won the trophy,” stressed a delightful Kagombe. “I managed to play well and managed to stay in contention after a tough day and pulled it off with a win.”
The annual amateur tournament organized by ICEA is in its second year. This year, the insurance company boosted the tournament with a 12 million shillings.
“ICEA is committed to the development of sports in Uganda. We are aware that we have some budding golfing talents and we hope that through such an event, we can attract and hone their skills,” said Andrew Ssekito the ICEA Mbarara branch manager
According to the chairman Mbarara sports club Andrew Mutakooha, one of the major challenges faacing the game is that it is regarded as a game for the old because it is highly dominated by the elderly.
“There are very few golf courses in Uganda. Those that are there are dominated by old people. We would like to see this perception change,” said Mutakooha. “We need to target the youth by providing equipment and programmes that can facilitate and train the youth. That way they will be attracted to join the game.”
This year’s tournament attracted players from Tororo, Kabale, Kilembe, Kakungulu, Kampala, Jinja and Entebbe golf clubs.
In the ladies category, Winnie Mpaabwa 72 nett was winner in Ladies group A.
In the Men category (Group B) Cyprian Aliabayo playing off handicap 13 (69 nett on count back) was the winner.
