Uganda will not have to wait for their final match to be the first men’s nation to win the Rugby 7s gold medal at the African Games. The gold medal was all but guaranteed after Ghana’s upset over Zimbabwe by 21-17 points.

Having beaten Benin by 56-00 points, Uganda remained the only unbeaten team in the competition. The ten tries were scored by Denis Etwau (3), Aaron Ofoyrwoth (2), Nobert Okeny, Timothy Kisiga, Desire Ayera, Philip Wokorach, and Alex Aturinda. Wokorach (2) and Ofoyrwoth kicked three conversions.

Burkina Faso and Zimbabwe were Uganda’s closest challengers with one loss each. Defeat against Ghana dropped Zimbabwe out of the competition while Burkina Faso’s points difference pales in comparison to Uganda’s.

Thus, win or lose, Uganda will have their crowning moment after facing Kenya in the final match of the tournament.
