Uganda Women have won the first-ever gold medal in Rugby 7s at the African Games. This was after going unbeaten in four matches during the 13th edition of the games in Accra, Ghana.

In Day Three’s final game at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium, Uganda defeated Madagascar by 29-00. They played the match with verve from start to finish, scoring five unanswered tries.

Lydia Namabiro, Grace Auma (2), Peace Lekuru, and Grace Nabaggala put their names on the scoreboard for the tries. Maimuna Nassozi was impressive off the boot by kicking two conversions.

Uganda’s Medal Tally at African Games:

The women’s triumph takes Uganda’s gold medal tally to three at the 13th African Games but with the Men’s Rugby team also waiting to add another, the number is likely to increase to four. Husina Kobugabe and Gladys Mbabazi won gold in the Badminton Women’s doubles and cyclist Charles Kagimu won gold in the Individual Time Trial category.

In total, Uganda has, so far, garnered 15 medals, including 5 silver and 6 bronze medals.
