WBC International light heavyweight champion Joseph “Owakabi” Lubega, believes he has the right mind-set to win a world title in his division in the World Boxing Council.

“I am ready to fight for a major world title in the World Boxing Council in my division,” Lubega said after his recent win over Egyptian Hany “The Hurricane” Atiyo. “It is something that I will be discussing with my promoter and my manager’s soon.”

Lubega, retained his belt with a fourth round knockout against Egyptian Hany “The Hurricane” Atiyo, recently at the Rwenzori Boxing gala at Kyadondo rugby ground. He improved his record to 16 wins 6 losses and 9 within the distance.

It was the second time that Lubega was fighting his North African opponent having beaten him to the African Boxing Union crown last year.

Lubega was the second Ugandan fighter to hold a title defense infront of his home crowd. In 1997 Justin Juuko, defended his WBC-I super featherweight belt against Ukrainean Volodymyr Matkivskyy at Nakivubo stadium.

On the same card was Thailand based Ugandan kick-boxer Umar “The Pain” Semata winning the vacant WBC Muay Thai lightweight title against Australian Rhys Karakyriacos on unanimous points decision.

National bantamweight champion Sande ‘Swico’ Kizito knocked out another Egyptian Mohammed Atef in the third round in a non-title fight.
