Following Harambee Stars’ Captain Victor Wanyama’s switch from Scottish Premier League club Celtic to Southampton, the £12.5million transfer fee has sparked a five-way fight as clubs need to get a share of the fee.

A list of six clubs that Wanyama went through before joining Celtic that include four Kenyan clubs JMJ Academy, Nairobi City Stars, AFC Leopards and Country Bus plus Belgian side Beerschot and Sweden’s Helsingborg all lay claim on the fee through various sell-on clauses and development fees.

Beerschot’s negotiated a sell-on clause when Celtic nabbed Wanyama for £900,000 in 2011, though the figure is believed to be just one per cent of future profit.

According to FIFA rules, clubs who play a part in nurturing players during their ‘development phase’ – between the ages of 12 and 23 – are entitled to a share of five per cent of any transfer fee. And one of those sides, Nairobi City Stars have already made it clear they want paid. Chairman Peter Jabuya said: “We are looking to get our share of the pie. FIFA laws are very clear. This is because our club played a crucial part in his development and the name of our club is inscribed in his trade license”.

“He is a player who has brought us honour and we are proud to be associated with him.”

Besides, other clubs (AFC Leopards, JMJ Academy and Country Bus) have all lodged claims for the share of the fee but FKF boss Sam Nyamweya admits some claims are not well documented.

“We have seen some claims here but not everyone has the right documentation.

“We will suggest that anyone who is to be paid part of the money must prove they deserve it.”

According to Sports.stv.tv, if all goes as expected; the financial breakdown for the £12.5 a record transfer fee paid to a Scottish club will be as follows; The four Kenyan clubs under which Wanyama played will share £257,980 as development fees, Belgian side Beerschot will earn between £625,000 to £1,250,000 as sell-on clause, Celtic will earn £10,586,020 to £11,211,020 while Southampton retains £62,500 of solidarity payment.
