The wait is finally over as 43 drivers have confirmed participation in the annual Shell VPower Pearl of Africa Uganda rally. Its scrutineering going on Thursday at Shell Lugogo as machines await flag off on Friday at Silver Springs Hotel Bugolobi for a two day event that kicks off with a Super Special Stage at Lubiri before competitive sections in Wobulenzi, Luwero.
With less than 24 hours to the event, Kawowo Sports’ Ismael Kiyonga quotes some of the participants who all vow to finish on the podium. From Ian Duncan to Edison Munghereza, let’s get started;
“I am not under pressure. I am already out of the race for National Rally Championship (NRC) title. I want to enjoy this year’s Pearl and take on the foreigners without fear or favour. I also want to add to my 2011 victory.” – 2011 PAR Champion Posiano Lwakataka
“I am in the running for the NRC title. I am hungry for points and at the same time I also want to win my first Pearl.” – Ronald Ssebuguzi
“The last time I drove in the VPower Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally, I left on a sad note after the death of Riyaz Kurji (RIP) in 2009. When I met Ssebuguzi (Ronald) during the Safari Rally in June, he invited us to come back. We expect a good challenge from Ugandan drivers like Jas (Mangat) whom we know very well and Ponsiano Lwakataka, who I remember more vividly for beating Riyaz,” – Kenyan driver Coast Pekee.
“The organisers gave us a good deal and decided to test my machine (Ford Capri). I could not do it in Kenya as I drive a sponsored car (Evo. IX). This was a good opportunity for me. But I also want to win.” – 1994 WRC Safari Rally Winner Ian Duncan
“I finished sixth last year and this time I’m going for a better place. I know it’s going to be very competitive because there are so many drivers but I have a plan to manage and drive steadily to the podium” – Edison Munghereza
“We have a great chance to entertain our fans but also show that Uganda is the latest powerhouse on continental rallying,” – 2011 NRC winner Susan Muwonge.
