In-form Entebbe golfer Willy Deus Kitata, shot three under par 141 to claim the seventh edition of the Castle Lite Onito memorial golf tournament at the Jinja golf club on the weekend.
Kitaka one shot off the pace in the on the opening round returning one over par 71 with Jinja’s Ronald Bukenya, taking a two under par 70 leading in the opening round, but Entebbe golfer overturned the tables taking the next round to claim the overall crown that had several national team golfers battling for the piece of glory at the 9 hole course.
Enroute to his win he sunk birdies on hole 1,2,3,4,7 and an eagle on hole 8 however he also had double bogey on 7 and bogeys on 17 and 18.
“It’s a honour to win this tournament that is in memory of great golf legends Sadi Onito and his son Charles Yokwe,” Kitata said. “To me every win is important to me and gives me confidence hopefully this form will continue for the rest of the season as I look forward to the Uganda Open which is due.”
Jinja’s Ronald Bukenya shot two over par 146 to finish runner-up while Kilembe’s Robert Happy 148 gross and last year’s winner Lawrence Muhenda 150 gross finished fourth and fifth respectively.
This year’s edition a total of 184 participants from various clubs in the country with a strong continigent of 64 golfers from Kenya’s Kitale, Kakamega and Eldoret golf clubs. Nile Breweries under their brand Castle Lite sunk in a total of 70 million into the three day Uganda Golf Union event with the sponsors donating 4 million shillings to the Onito Family.
Group A was won by Walter Debbo with 38 points while Group B was won by Kitale’s Michael Chemutai with 42 points while Group C was won by Faisal Mulindwa with 40 points.
Flavia Namakula retained her crown winning group A with 34 stableford points while group B was won by Gloria Namukasa with 45 points.
Deo Akope won the men’s professionals with a score of 138 gross.
