2013 Beach Woodball Circuit:

Women Singles: Winner – Lillian Zawedde (Ndejje University)

Mixed Doubles: Winner – Lillian Zawedde and Eric Kanyike (Ndejje University)

The reigning Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) woodball player of the year, Lillian Zawedde has once again re-affirmed her woodball prowess after winning the overall women singles beach woodball accolade on top of combining with Eric Kanyike to win the mixed doubles top prize at Entebbe sports beach.

At the 3rd and final beach woodball circuit of the year played on a sunny Sunday along the sandy Shores of Lake Victoria, Zawedde, a masters’ student of Sports Management at Ndejje University made each and every stroke count.

Over the 6 gates played in the opening round of the single’s event, the ever jovial had a remarkable gross score figure of  13 before returning an identical one in the second round of 6 fairways.

“I thank the Almighty for helping me win atleast two of the circuits and I will train hard to maintain my top position”, said Zawedde, who also won the 2013 Uganda Woodball women accolade, that was played on grass.

Zawedde had lost the initial woodball circuit in April after Nantege Kyolaba Shamusa won the opener with 56 strokes, 1 less than Zawedde’s, who later bounced back to claim the lead in the second circuit, onto which she consolidated the Sunday icing on the cake triumph.

Come the mixed double’s event, Zawedde combined with Eric Kanyike to return an incredible 38 points overcoming the duo of Jimmy Francis Sserwanje and Gladys Nakijjoba, who settled for bronze with 32 points.

The other winners were Onesmus Atamba (men singles), Moses Namukoye and El – Muhammed Musisi (Doubles men) and Shamsa Kyolaba Nantege who combined with Daniela Nabukalu to scoop the ladies’ doubles top prize after carding 29 sweet points over 12 gates.

All the winners received beautifully crafted wooden plaques designed in the map of Uganda shape with the game of woodball animations, with the Uganda Woodball Federation (UWbF) and Sports Beach Entebbe (sponsors) inscriptions.

Perhaps, the day that started with smiles and merry making at the fun parked packed beach shoreline ended in abject tears as an unidentified gentleman estimated to be in his late 20’s drowned just 2 metres off the sand where the beautiful game was being played.

Focus now shifts to the annual corporate woodball event slated for next weekend at the Nakawa based MUBS grass fairways in which 24 gates will be played.
