Nicholas Muyingo’s five goals for Makerere University single handedly condemned St. Lawrence University to their heaviest defeat since the start of the Beach Soccer league.
The second round of the Pepsi National Beach league got underway at the sandy Lido beach resort shores of Africa’s greatest fresh water body, Lake Victoria on Sunday.
“Composure and team work helped us overcome this much fancied team”, a visibly excited Muyingo told Kawowo Sports after the game, as his coach, Pius Sserugo and teammates celebrated.
The lanky striker was on target in all the three quarters of the game, his first cancelling John Tusuubira’s opener before before he shipped in the two more strikes in the second quarter of the game to complete the hat trick.
S.C Villa Skipper, Ayub Kisaliita marked his debut on the sand with a sweet penalty for St.Lawrence later in the final quarter of the game, though his goal acted to reduce the damage as Muyingo’s other brace had already taken his personal and team tally to 5.
In the other fixtures played, Brian Nkuubi and Baker Lukooya marked winning debuts for Makerere University Business School (MUBS) with a quadruple and a strike respectively as MUBS ran rout over Zai Plaza in a Moonsoon group fixture.
Benson Ocen’s brace, and a further goal from the diminutive but tricky striker, Maxwell Okello pasted more misery for Zai Plaza who got their consolational strikes through Yusuf Mabingo, Mimu Ssemakula and Said Rahman Hassan.
Mathia Kigonya’s brace inspired Stormers to a 5 -3 win over Kampala International University. The gangly player, who plays in the goal for FUFA super league side, Soana made his second quarter introduction count as he injected pace, urgency and life and scored his team’s 2 winning goals.
Earlier, Isma Kagingo’s double and Nigerian born Isaac Eshioke had put KIU in the lead before Ibrahim Pengelle’s brace and Emma Mpingu had forced the game into a decisive quarter with the scores glued 3 all.
Home team, Entebbe Fisheries Institute lost 3 – 4 to Mengo International after a tense but thrilling mid – day penalty shoot-out.
Tied at 3 all, the two sides played a decisive 3 minute barren quarter and in the shoot out, Rogers Kazamula successfully converted before Bajja Lorenzo missed his effort to grant the Kampala side victory.
Another Entebbe side, Nkumba Select made amends with a 4 -1 win over Buwanika Bulls. Skipper, Douglas Muganga had 2 goals before towering forward Roch Somoka and his aggressive partner Faizo Muwawo got a strike apiece.
Andrew Balinda coloured the score line a respectable second look with a consolation goal for Buwanika Bulls.
Kabalagala Rangers won a very tense fixture over Zaba Super Market in a 4 – 3 thrilling match where either team players and officials lost their cool and nearly turned ugly with fists and blood spill. Luckily, a quick reminder of the fair play spirit saved face and image of the sport.
Unlike many of the beach soccer league matches, the opening weekend missed out on the usual spark as the bar set by the organizers was not met.
The usual queen dancers and half-time games were extinct and only a mere 54 goals rained in on the sand nets, including that walk over for Galaxy F.M sponsored Real Galaticos, over FUFA Super league, Kira Young, who missed out for no genuine reason.
“Our sponsors, Pepsi will be with us on the second week of the circuit on 9th February 2014”, Deo Mutabazi, the President Uganda Beach Soccer Association told Kawowo Sports when tasked of the missing spark that had been hyped by crown beverage giants, Pepsi.
Nevertheless, the fans enjoyed the opening week and as usual the flicks, dribbles and shaking goal nets paid for the missing entertainment as King Michael formerly DJ Michael spinned the Disks till night in the night.
Catch you back at Lido Beach on the 26th January for the Ladies’ beach championship.
