Entebbe Ladies’ Open

At Entebbe Golf Club

The 2014 Castle Lite Entebbe Ladies Open is set to tee off this Friday at the par 71 Entebbe Club minus the big names in ladies golf in the country. Close to 70 women golfers are gearing to have a go at one of the most prestigious ladies’ tournaments in the country at the par 71 Entebbe golf course.

The two day event that coincides with the international women’s day, is taking place at Entebbe Lake side golf club, East and Central Africa’s oldest Golf course.

Last year’s champion, Iddy Madina HusseinHussein(a.k.a ‘queen of the greens’) from Gymkhana golf club in Arusha Tanzania has been unable to defend her title.

“I am busy with work related commitments but hopefully, I will make it for the Uganda ladies’ open later on in the year”, Madina says citing a busy work schedule back back home.

In Madina’s absence, Rwanda Golf Club has sent in two able representatives, who will work toothlessly to give the Ugandan pack a good run for their money.

Fort Portal’s  Maureen Okura and Pauline Nambi, Kabale’s Sheila Kesiime and Fort Portal’s Jill Pinda “Akiki” Birungi are some of the top guns expected to compete for the main prize by the end of the 36 holes of action on Saturday.

Former promising lady caddies, who have rose up the ranks like Toro Club’s Caroline  Ajwang, Christine Katushabe and Christine Ayango, Entebbe’s Resty Nalutaaya, Agnes Namutebi, Sharon Assimwe and the 17 year old Lillian Kizza will participate are expected to give the experienced pack a bloody nose.

Seasoned golfer, Irene Nakalembe misses out on her favored home turf due to a long lay out and so are Uganda Golf Club’s Flavia Namakula, who was a winner in 2012 has skipped the event as she is attending the Pro-am event at the Barclays Kenya Open.

The men’s subsidiary group has attracted over 100 golfers from all over the country and will only play on Saturday.

The organizers of the event Entebbe Club recently received two other corporate sponsors together with the Main one Nile Breweries under their premium brand Castle Lite.

Castle-Lite has injected 18 million shillings into the event and is joined Spedag- Inter freight who have sponsored the event since inception with another 3.5 million shillings.

The new kid on the block is Swivel Marketing who are injecting another 5 million shillings into the event.

Oscar Mulira of Swivel Marketing stated that Swivel Marketing was proud to be associated with a growing game being played at the fastest growing golf club in the country and looked forward to more associations like this with Entebbe Club.

David Isabirye is a senior staff writer for Kawowo Sports where he covers most of the major events.
