Excited fans in the mental health awareness sports gala hosted at Legends Rugby ground, Naguru in 2024

Overview:

The sports activities involve entail football, netball, tag-of-war and mini-marathons with several mind games like chess, scrabble, checkers and puzzle competition. These galas come along with a number of free services provided as mental health screening and counseling, medical consultation, eye and dental check-ups, hepatitis testing, blood donation, sickle cell screening and HIV testing.

2025 Mental Health Awareness Sports Gala Series:

  • Eastern Region: 12th April (Jinja)
  • Western Region: 10th May (Mbarara)
  • Central Region: 9th August (Makerere University, Kampala)

The Gracy Minds Empowerment Initiative Uganda has confirmed a number of mental health awareness sports galas across the country.

These will take place in the different corners of the country; Eastern, Western, Central and the yet to be confirmed in Northern region.

The Eastern region event will be held in Jinja city on 12th April 2025 with a target for fundraising for Doctrinal Modern Primary School in Kasuku Village, Iringa Parish, Buyende District.

The purpose for the Mental health awareness sports gala in Eastern region will be to raise funds to support the construction and development of Doctrinal Modern Primary School in Buyende District, ensuring better learning environments and resources for children in the region.

This will be followed by the Western region event in Mbarara city on 10th May 2025, to support the School Mental Health Dialogue, where there will be discussions on mental health challenges in schools on how to create healthier environments for both students and teachers.

The central region event will be in Kampala city at the historic Makerere University under the theme “Mental health in workplaces” on 9th August 2025.

This will be the second edition of the mental health awareness sports gala since the first one held at Legends Rugby grounds in Naguru last year.

This second edition of the event in Kampala will spotlight Mental Health in Workplaces, promoting awareness and strategies to address mental health challenges in professional environments, ensuring a supportive and healthy workplace culture. In 2024 still, there was another mental health sports awareness gala that was held in Northern Uganda at Pece War Memorial stadium, Gulu city.

Stress Clinic emerged victorious with HAF Uganda as runners up.

A number of partners as Ministry of Health, Bank of Uganda, ISO, TPO Uganda, Uganda Parliamentary Forum on Mental Health, FORE Uganda, Mental Health Focus Uganda, Uganda Red cross Society and Girl Power Uganda made the event a success.
